Hello! My name is Lauren and I love to teach and learn about History and Political Science & Government. I graduated summa cum laude with Bachelor's degrees in History and Political Science and then I went on to earn a Master's degree in U.S. History. I teach history because I don't think we can understand the world we live in - or who we are - without it. I became passionate about studying history in college, when it no longer was just memorizing dates of obscure battles or the names of people who had been long gone. Ultimately, I believe history has the capacity to help us become more empathetic human beings. I believe when we connect historical events to the present, we can not only see the relevance of history in our lives, but also make that learning more tangible and rooted in our real life experiences. I use a variety of methods in my teaching, including discussion, debate, historical role playing, and interactive timelines. I have extensive experience with historical research and writing and have developed specialized techniques for teaching how to write precisely and concisely for AP exams and have taught college-level historical research and writing for many years. While I was earning my Master's degree, I was a teaching assistant and led undergraduate discussion sections for three years. I then taught undergraduate U.S. History survey courses as a graduate instructor. I next taught AP U.S. History and AP U.S. Government & Politics. During this time, I received certifications to teach AP U.S. History and AP U.S. Government & Politics from the College Board and oversaw 200+ students take the AP exams. I helped even some 8th and 9th grade students score 3s, 4s, and 5s on these AP exams. After moving to Durango, Colorado for my husband's work, I continued teaching U.S. History and Honors courses at the college level, continuing to hone my teaching and advising skills. I am incredibly passionate about the value of history not only in education but also in both society and our personal lives and this comes across in my teaching. I approach teaching history in a discussion-based and interactive way that makes studying the past more memorable and enjoyable. I can adapt to a variety of learning styles and enjoy tutoring because it allows for one-on-one interactions that make learning more tangible and personal. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions or to schedule a lesson!
